John Van Pelt is a professional development associate with The Leadership and Learning Center and is Superintendent of Lake Villa School District #41 in Lake Villa, Illinois. John has 31 years experience in education. He has taught at both the elementary and secondary levels and has been an elementary school principal and a high school principal. John has worked closely with building administrators and has extensive experience in school improvement and change, curriculum, instruction, leadership development, and assessment. As a former Associate Superintendent in Waterloo, Iowa, John led several initiatives which increased student achievement and helped narrow the achievement gap in a diverse urban school district.
John holds a B.S. and Ed.S. from the University of Iowa, M.S. from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Ed.D. from Drake University. He has worked in Iowa, Wyoming, Illinois, and taught in Sydney Australia for the New South Wales Department of Education.
He has provided professional development workshops for teachers and administrators, including DDDM/Data Teams, and monitoring curriculum and instruction through classroom walk through observations and follow up conversations. John is also an Associate Auditor for Curriculum Management Systems, Inc. and has participated in curriculum management audits in Washington State and South Carolina.
